This striking pendant is a fine example of mid-Victorian jewellery design, crafted in 18ct yellow gold and set with a large polished amethyst cabochon. The rich purple of the amethyst was especially prized during the 19th century for its regal associations, making it a gemstone of choice for bold statement jewels of the era.
The stone is mounted in a rope-edged bezel, a detail typical of Victorian craftsmanship, and finished with an articulated fringe of gold drops. These pointed tassels are individually suspended, creating movement and drama when worn — a hallmark of the period’s fascination with jewellery that combined grandeur with playfulness.
The reverse features a smooth closed back, consistent with Victorian goldsmithing techniques, and a sturdy tapered bale allows the pendant to be worn on a variety of chains or collars.
A true statement jewel of the Victorian era, this pendant reflects the period’s love of vibrant colour and bold design. Today, it remains a wearable work of art and a collector’s piece of distinction.
