Antique 9ct Gold Faceted Belcher Guard Chain with Dog Clip c.1900

A substantial and beautiful antique guard chain in 9ct yellow gold, dating to around 1900, with faceted belcher links that catch the light with every movement. The cut-cornered box form of each link gives the chain a liveliness that plain belcher lacks — at 56 inches and 43.5 grams it drapes and moves with real presence. Guard chains of this length were originally worn looped through a buttonhole to secure a pocket watch or locket, but their versatility as a wearable object has only grown with time.

The chain fastens with its original gold dog clip clasp, stamped 9ct, which is itself a period-appropriate and characterful detail. Condition is excellent throughout. Worn at full length, doubled, or knotted, this is a genuinely wearable antique chain with the weight and quality to last another century.
