A charming and characterful antique bar brooch in 9ct yellow gold, hallmarked Birmingham 1904, set with two garnets and a central diamond in star settings within a raised rectangular panel, flanked by richly chased foliate decoration at either end. The deep red of the garnets and the bright point of the diamond make for a classic Victorian colour combination that remains deeply appealing, and the quality of the engraved surround gives the piece a decorative richness that belies its modest scale.
The brooch conceals a locket compartment on the reverse, fitted with a glazed round window — a sentimental detail entirely in keeping with the jewellery culture of the period, when pieces were frequently made to hold a portrait miniature, lock of hair, or photograph. The locket back is intact and functional. A genuinely lovely dual-purpose antique brooch in good condition, with the added depth of its hidden compartment.
