A richly decorative antique watch key fob in gold and pinchbeck, dating to around 1850, centred on a double-sided hardstone panel set with bloodstone on one face and agate on the other. The bloodstone — deep green with vivid red flecks — and the smoky grey-brown agate present two quite different characters depending on which face is turned outward, giving the piece a pleasing versatility. The gold body is chased with bold rococo scrollwork that frames the stone on both faces, with decorative ball terminals at each shoulder, a winding key bit at one end, and a swivel fob ring at the other.
Watch key fobs of this quality were worn suspended from a waistcoat chain as both a functional and decorative object — the key used to wind the pocket watch, the fob itself a small statement of taste and means. The rococo revival scrollwork and the bloodstone and agate pairing are both characteristic of mid-Victorian jewellery at its most exuberant. Condition is good. A characterful and collectible piece of Victorian gentleman's accessories.
