A neat and well-preserved antique silver name brooch, hallmarked Birmingham 1882, with the name "MABEL" in raised lettering set within a pointed oval cartouche with a serrated edge and engraved foliate decoration. The pointed oval form gives this brooch a slightly different character to the more common rectangular name brooch of the period — more elegant in profile and a little more refined in overall composition. The lettering is crisp and the engraving well-executed throughout.
The brooch carries full Birmingham hallmarks dated 1882 and is in excellent condition. Mabel was a popular Victorian name with considerable period resonance, and name brooches of this quality and age are increasingly collected both as jewellery and as social artefacts. A sweet and wearable piece of Victorian silver.
