Art Deco Platinum Ruby, Sapphire & Diamond Day & Night Flip Ring

A rare and wonderfully clever Art Deco "Day & Night" flip ring, crafted in platinum throughout. The central band is calibré-set, half with rich royal-blue sapphires and half with pinkish-red rubies, while two hinged half-eternity bands of millegrain-set diamonds swivel on either side — so the ring can be worn with either the sapphires or the rubies at the centre of the two diamond bands, blue by day and red by night. Worn sideways, the hinges even fall into a zigzag across the finger.

Also known as a "Night & Day" or flip-over ring, this ingenious design dates from the 1920s, when such versatile, mechanical jewels were at their most fashionable, and genuine examples are increasingly hard to find. Beautifully made and endlessly wearable — three rings in one — it is a real collector's piece, and a joy to own.
