A charming antique silver name brooch dating to around 1890, with the name "MAY" in bold raised lettering set within a shaped cartouche of pointed profile, decorated with engraved geometric motifs above and below the name and small floral accents at either side. The structured, architectural form gives this brooch a slightly more formal character than the softer foliate name brooches of the period — crisp and confident in its design, with a good weight and presence for its modest dimensions.
The hallmarks are too rubbed to read fully, but the style and construction are entirely consistent with Birmingham silver of the 1880s–1900 period. Condition is excellent throughout. May was both a given name and a term of seasonal endearment in the Victorian period, and name brooches of this quality make appealing gifts as much as collectible antiques.
