A charming pair of Victorian drop earrings in 18ct gold, each centred with a large garnet carbuncle — a foil-backed garnet cabochon — of deep, glowing wine-red, collet-set between a plain ball surmount above and a pointed gold terminal below. The rich, dark colour of the carbuncles against the warm 18ct gold is beautifully characteristic of the period, and the simple, elegant form lets the stones take centre stage.
The carbuncle was among the most beloved of Victorian gems, its deep red long associated with love, devotion and constancy. Light and comfortable on shepherd's hook fittings, these are a warm and thoroughly wearable antique pair. As the garnets are foil-backed in the traditional manner, they should be kept dry and never immersed in water, to protect the foil behind the stones.
